Bridge’s are fun but not when they lead to a prison! This week we made masks, went on a scavenger hunt and went on the Bridge of Sighs. Read on to learn more.
Look at all the masked people. Today I am going to tell you about the carnival or in Italian Maschera di Carnevale! Did you know that the masked carnival takes place in between Jan. 27 and Feb. 13? I did not know much about the masked carnival until I went to make a mask at La Bauta where I met a guy that taught us about Italy. Did you know that the first masked carnival was in 1162? Wow! That is old! At the carnival, people would do bad things like steal and make fun of people because he or she was wearing a mask so no one would know. Do you know how the first carnival started? Well, Venice defeated the Patriarch of Aquileia in a war so the townsfolk had a big party. Over time people have been making it more and more fun and now they have a competition for the best mask!
Tall medieval buildings are cool but not when they are about to collapse! On Wednesday, we went on a scavenger hunt. Remember what I said about tall medieval buildings collapsing? Well they aren’t any more because people sometimes use a wooden arch to hold up the walls so the buildings won’t collapsing. To find other clues we went to a bridge with a secret. The secret was the hidden letters. The hidden letters were w, v, and e. In Italian it spelt King Victor Emmanuel. The family that built this bridge was secretly supporting their king. Finally we went to a museum that was closed but we went to the locker room to get the treasure. The treasure was a notebook and a lollipop.
It was an interesting day on Thursday because I went to the Bridge of Sighs. The Bridge of Sighs is the bridge that connects the palace to the jail. Say you were put on trial for eating the king’s cupcake. If you were found guilty you would go over the Bridge of Sighs to the jail. The jail was bad. Really bad. Prisoners would sometimes die but the old jail was worse. The new one was actually supposed to be made more comfortable for the prisoners. On the other side, the palace had paintings, marble, black marble, and gold! Lots of gold. If I was the king I would use it to impress anyone that came to the palace.
On to the next city! I can’t wait for you to read my next blog post!
